When someone searches for a service “near me,” the first thing they usually see isn’t your website. It’s your Google Business Profile: the listing with your photos, reviews, hours and a big “Call” button. For local service businesses, it can be the single most valuable piece of online real estate you own.

The good news is that most of what makes a profile perform well is in your control. Here are seven practical steps we use with clients.

1. Choose the right primary category

Your primary category tells Google what you are. Be specific: “Auto repair shop” instead of “Car service,” or “Dental hygienist” instead of “Health.” Then add a few secondary categories for the other services you genuinely offer.

2. Complete every section

Hours, service areas, phone number, website, services, attributes, opening date. A complete profile gives Google more reasons to show you and gives customers fewer reasons to hesitate. Make sure your business name, address and phone number match exactly what’s on your website.

3. Add real photos regularly

Customers want to see your team, your work and your location. Upload genuine photos instead of stock images, and keep adding new ones every few weeks. Before-and-after shots work especially well for contractors, auto shops and beauty businesses.

4. Ask every happy customer for a review

Reviews are one of the strongest signals for both Google and customers. Make it easy: send a short text with your direct review link right after a job is finished. Timing matters. The best moment to ask is when the customer is happiest.

5. Reply to every review, good or bad

Thank people by name for positive reviews. For negative ones, stay calm, acknowledge the issue and offer to make it right offline. Future customers read your replies, and a thoughtful response can win more trust than a perfect rating.

6. Post updates and offers

Google posts let you share news, seasonal offers and events directly on your profile. A short weekly post keeps your listing active and gives searchers a reason to call today instead of next month.

7. Track calls and adjust

Your profile’s performance report shows how many people called, asked for directions or visited your website. Check it monthly. If calls drop, look at what changed: fewer reviews, outdated photos, or new competitors nearby.

The bottom line

A well-managed Google Business Profile works for you around the clock. It takes a few minutes a week, but consistency is what separates the businesses that get the calls from the ones that don’t.
